From last night’s AFF/Reason happy hour at ESL. I believe I am telling Yglesias and Logan that the entire field of international relations is full of crap, or some such thing.

Mr Wilkinson,
I am pursuing a masters in Russian Studies to be followed up by a PhD in some other discipline. Possible choices, Econ, Poli Sci, Sociology, Public Policy. As you can tell my interests are very varied, what would be your advice. Naturally, I have a libertarian bias in my thinking so please factor that into your advice. Kindest Regards, Richard Pointer

It seems to me that the fall (in progress, not complete) of realism as the dominant approach to IR theory might make it all a bit more friendly to libertarians. Less reification/ontological sanctification of the state for neoliberals, constructivist approaches, etc.

Yeah. My point was that there is no IR Theory. There is just better or worse psychology about the particular guys in charge of particular governments and armies. Things would be a lot less confusing if we just accepted that.
