DC Smoking Ban Poll

DC Ward One Councliman Jim Graham has a little poll on his website asking “Should the DC Council act to eliminate smoking in indoor workplaces?” (On the left column, a ways down.) Apparently the anti-freedom forces at Smoke-Free DC already got the word out and they’re way ahead in the poll. Will you help? Tell my councilman that DC should not violate the rights of business owners to run their establishments as they choose.

  1. I did as well, but I’m afraid that once those anti-smoking advocates set up shop, the virus is incurable. I go to school near Columbus, Ohio, where we just had bans pop up county-wide. They don’t only go for the big cities; they also attack the suburbs (where I live). Unfortunately, in most towns the city councils decide on bans at the insistence of those groups while the public is blissfully unaware. In Columbus proper a campaign was mounted to put the smoking-ban to a vote, but while they succeeded in getting the measure on the ballot, most residents were apathetic (“I’m not a smoker so why should I care?”) and the vocal minority won.

  4. As a proponent of freedom I SUPPORT the DC Smoking Ban because it opens up the bars and pubs to a large majority that in affect have been restricted from these places by smoke. Smoking is a choice not a right – and the right to the cleanest possible air, and to achieve the highest quality of cleanliness in public places (although privately owned) is not too much to ask – and it trumps any “right” to smoke. For me and other thousands, it’s “back in the nighlife” for us. Yayyyyyyy!
