Social Change Workshop for Graduate Students:
Rationality & Institutions
Dear [Name],

I’m writing to invite you to apply to an exciting summer seminar
featuring a world-class faculty for graduate students from top programs in the social sciences and humanities. Sponsored by the Institute for Humane Studies, the Social Change Workshop for Graduate Students is a unique free-of-charge seminar and student conference to be held at the University of Virginia, June 19-25.

The theme of this year’s Workshop is Rationality and Institutions. We will be asking both descriptive and normative questions about human rationality and its relationship to fundamental social institutions. Such as:
  • Is institutional structure the key to prosperity?
  • What’s the relationship between social norms and the stability of political institutions?
  • Is social justice at odds with economic efficiency?
  • How does the economic conception of rationality relate to psychological and philosophical conceptions?
  • Should evolutionary psychology change the way we do moral theory, economics, political science, and law?
The Workshop features a truly world-class faculty. This year's faculty includes:
Also invited are Nobel Laureates James M. Buchanan and Vernon L. Smith, as well as Stanford's Avner Greif.

The March 31 April 15 application deadline is quickly approaching and places are limited to about 100 students, so please act soon. Apply today.

The Workshop is not simply a series of cutting-edge lectures. It also provides the opportunity for select students to present their research and receive feedback on their work from Workshop faculty and students at some of the best graduate programs around the world. You are invited to apply to present your work. To apply to be a presenter, send us a short abstract, a cover letter stating the relationship of your work to the theme of “Rationality and Institutions,” and a current CV.

If you're curious about the kinds of students who attend the Workshop, go ahead and take a look at this page of articles and papers from previous Workshop students or this page of student testimonials. Get a taste of the Workshop by checking out these video clips of past and present faculty.

Given the current turbulent state of the world, there is perhaps no better time for tomorrow’s brightest minds to spend a week among their future colleagues reflecting on new ways to think about social change and the relationship between human institutions and human nature. If you’d like to explore new ideas and make new friends in an ideal academic atmosphere, please consider joining us.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at ihs@gmu.edu.

Sincerely,

Will Wilkinson
Workshop Director
